Last night I went to eat at a sushi place called Dancing Wasabi. I'm sure if you are an avid sushi eater than you have definitely heard of this place.
It's located in Mt. Lookout square, near Hyde Park. They offer half price sushi every day of the week, so it's really affordable for people who can't afford to go to expensive sushi restaurants. They have the best specialty rolls and the service is usually pretty quick.
Some of my favorite rolls are: the sunday morning roll, spicy tuna roll, eel cucumber roll and the yum yum roll. Those are just a few.
The only downside to this place is that it's extremely small and you're typically sitting at a table with people you don't know and it could be very uncomfortable. I don't know about everyone else, but I really hate sitting close to other people I don't know at a restaurant. The only reason why I keep going back to this place is because the sushi is just so good.
If you haven't been here yet check it out anytime of the week. They're also open until 2 a.m. Monday- Friday, so if you like to go out to eat late then this is the place for you. Let me know if anyone has been there!
When I am seated with people I don't know, the experience can either be horrendous or awesome (sometimes a mix of both).
ReplyDeleteI really like going to places like Benihana, where groups of people are mixed together to eat and watch the food being prepared. As an avid people watcher, these situations are gold. Seeing a young couple on a date (or being a part of said couple) sitting with some drunk old people, or the family of four can provide some great conversation at its best, or a train wreck at its worst.
Generally, I just try to bring someone with me, so I at least have one person I know and can talk to if the group I'm with is... less than ideal.
I've only been there once, and I don't quite remember what it's like...
ReplyDeleteBut, I'll leave my opinions out since my parents own a Japanese restaurant and can be a little biased...
But I will say that environment makes the place. You can serve Skyline Chili somewhere but if it's in a different shape served on oddly shaped white plates with Bach or something in the background, it's not quite the same, know what I mean?
Boom baby, this place is amazing. I don't mind sitting next to people I don't know when I go there, but if I did, I would request a seat at the bar.
ReplyDeleteI agree that they are too small, and would love it if they bought out the Subway franchise next door, but I usually make the best of the situation by getting there a little early, then heading across the street to The Stand for a few beers while I wait.
By the way, if you haven't tried the Red Double roll, you haven't experienced Dancing Wasabi
I love late-night eating places, so this sounds like a place I will definitely have to go to!
ReplyDeleteI have been there and loved it! Their rolls are delicious and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I agree that it is a small restaurant, but I think it makes the experience more entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to this place but I don't like sushi, so that probably explains it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I totally love Nick's point about being seated around people. Those groups of people at places like Benihana or other Japanese steakhouses are so much fun, no matter what the case is.
My boss and I went out to one when we were on the road this season and I swear the woman running the place thought we were on a date (which we weren't, but she treated us like we were, which we got a huge kick out of)
I love sushi, so I'll definitely have to check this place out! I've never been there.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge sushi person, but I know that friends love this place! As far as sitting close to other people, I think it's part of the experience and many times when you go out to eat it's more about that than the actual food your eating. So, I could definitely see them either gaining/losing business for that factor. (I work at PF Chang's and we deal with people complaining about how close our tables are all the time... but then again we try and fit as many hungry people in as fast as we can (: )
ReplyDeleteThis is the best sushi place in the city in my opinion. Amazing specialty rolls. Lovely shrimp, tempura roll and the sunday morning are delicious. Also recommended, though it does sound weird: the left side of the paper menu features little one-bite size pieces of fish on a little roll of rice, and my favorite yet is the barbecue eel. Seriously, it's good.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem with Dancing Wasabi is its size and the wait you'll have to deal with if you try going anytime between 6 and 10. So for half-price sushi, get there early (5 on the dot) or post-midnight.
Lots of comments, but no crowdsourced posts. I'm puzzled.
